On September 22nd, the final workshop of the "CASA" project, an acronym for "Circular and Sustainable Concretes Additivated with Recycled Materials from Local Supply Chains," was held at the Scientific and Technological Campus of the University of Ferrara
The CASA project aims to contribute to strengthening the production sector operating in the field of building materials, focusing on waste recovery and valorization, in the spirit of the circular economy and sustainable development. In particular, CASA intends to develop “green” cementitious materials that incorporate waste from various regional production chains, such as the sports flooring sector (synthetic fibers), the ceramic industry (fired material waste), construction (Gasbeton), agricultural production (cattle manure, rice husk), and energy (biochar). CASA combines the high demand for construction materials with the need to valorize technologically poor waste often destined for landfills today. The project fully fits within the recent regulatory context of Minimum Environmental Criteria and promotes a shift in the conception and production of building materials towards reducing environmental impacts, sustainability, and reuse.
The event was organized in collaboration with the Order of Engineers of the Province of Ferrara.
From September 9th to 11th, the 41st° AIM (Italian Association of Metallurgy) National Conference was held at the University of Brescia, which saw the participation of researchers from the "Aldo Daccò" Centre for Corrosion and Metallurgy Studies. Scientific briefs relating to the recent research activities of the Centre were presented.
During the event, Francesca Gallo and Davide Maghini also received recognition for the best scientific presentation of their session! An important recognition that rewards the quality of the work done, scientific rigor, and effectiveness in disseminating the results.
In particular, the work presented by Francesca Gallo: "Corrosion behavior of the Ti21S alloy in solutions simulating biological fluids" (co-authors L. Tonelli, F. Gaiba, G. Cruciani, H. Iqbal, V. Grassi, F. Zanotto, E. Liverani, N. Sancisi, M. Conconi, A. Morri, A. Balbo, L. Ceschini), is part of the PRIN project (Research Projects of Relevant National Interest) – Call 2022 «New biocompatible, low stiffness, BETa-Ti ankle EndopRostheses manufactured by Laser Powder Bed fusion with functionally graded latex (FGL) structure – BETTER” (in collaboration with the University of Bologna).
On the occasion of the EUROCORR international conference, held in Dublin from 6 to 10 September, attended by Prof. Andrea Balbo, Prof. Federica Zanotto and Dr. Camilla Ferron, the prestigious Cavallaro Medal was awarded to the Prof. Dawei Zhang (Professor of the University of Science and Technology Beijing and Deputy Director of the National Materials Corrosion and Protection Data Center).
Established in 1965 in memory of Professor Leo Cavallaro — founder of the Centre of Corrosion and Metallurgy Studies “A. Daccò” of the University of Ferrara — the medal is awarded every two years to internationally renowned scientists who they are distinguished by their outstanding contribution to research in the field of corrosion.
On June 12, 2026, the Department of Engineering of the University of Ferrara celebrated the 70° anniversary of the founding of the "Aldo Daccò" Centre for Corrosion and Metallurgy Studies. Founded in 1956, the Centre today represents an international excellence in the field of scientific research and technology transfer on metallic materials.
The event was held in Hall 2 of the Scientific and Technological Campus and offered a comprehensive overview of the history of the Centre, current research activities, and prestigious collaborations with the industrial world. During the morning, the "Aldo Daccò 2025" Award and Medal (14th edition) was also awarded.
