Prof. Fabrizio Zucchi, Professor of Chemistry and Corrosion and Protection of Metal Materials at the Department of Engineering of Ferrara, now in retirement, has been awarded the Cavallaro Medal of the University of Ferrara for the year 2020.
The medal is awarded every two years under the auspices of the European Corrosion Federation (usually presented during the EFC Eurocorr Conference) to honor the memory and work of Prof. Leo Cavallaro, founder of the Center for Corrosion Studies "A. Daccò" (now Centre for Studies on Corrosion and Metallurgy "A. Daccò") of which Prof. Zucchi has long been Director.
The Award was given by the Commission for the following reasons:
"Prof. F. Zucchi gave important contributions for:
i) the development of corrosion inhibition science to fight general corrosion, pitting corrosion, hydrogen permeation and stress corrosion cracking on different engineering alloys;
ii) improving the knowledge of corrosion protection by silanes;
iii) understanding the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking on stainless steels, nickel alloys, duplex and superduplex steels, amorphous alloys, brasses and aluminum alloys and achieving information about the correlation between stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen permeation on carbon and duplex steels:
iv) the dissemination of the scientific culture on corrosion and corrosion protection by inhibitors and coatings, through the ten SEIC symposia and the "Corrosion and Scale Inhibitors" courses of the EFC, through the Italian and the International Specialization School in Science and Technology of Corrosion Phenomena, and by his long and challenging academic teaching activity;
v) understanding the corrosion behaviour of dental materials in particular of dental materials in artificial saliva, mercury amalgams and vetro-ionomeric cements for conservative dentistry and gold alloys of different nobility for prosthetic dentistry.".
